The Books 4 Kids project addresses the unmet needs of economically disadvantaged children who lack access to high quality books and reading skill development. Through the Books 4 Kids, JLM members partner with the community to address these unmet needs.
The JLM collects new and gently-used books for children from birth to grade 8. Books are donated from JLM member hosted drives, community organizations, school book drives and businesses. The Book Collection Drive is traditionally held from September 1 to March 1 each year. Books are distributed as they are collected.
Partnering with Minneapolis schools, community based organizations and non-profits, the books are distributed to underserved school children. To date, over 200,000 books have been collected and distributed directly into the children’s hands to own, take home, read and enjoy! For many of these children these are their very first books. Fostering an interest in reading early in life is one step the JLM is taking in reducing the achievement gap in our community.
